Yowie growls from the woods - Tuan Forest QLD
In September 2021 Jake and Miranda were on a weekend trip on the Cooloola Coast. They had been exploring some of the logging roads in the Toolara and Tuan forests when they came across a herd of Brumbies ahead of them eating grass by the roadside.
The Brumbies inhabit the region from Poona in the south all the way up to Howard in the north.
The couple slowed to a stop as the Brumbies became aware of their approach and the couple sat and watched as the horses gradually settled down and continued to eat all the time keeping vigilant of the couple's vehicle. They had been watching for about 10 minutes and told us how "peaceful" the horses and their foals looked in "beautiful evening twilight". In an instant everything changed from serene to terror. The tranquil scene was destroyed by a deep guttural growl from inside the treeline which was followed by a "hideous" roar. Jake described the sounds as a "huge growl and roar" like "nothing he had ever heard" and "just seemed to project through the entire forest". He said the Brumbies scattered frantically in all directions and looked terrified.
The section of Tuan forest where Jake and Miranda had their Yowie encounter.
Miranda explained that the vocalization was so deep and loud they both felt it in their chests and as the roar stopped Jake started the car, spun it around, and sped off along the dirt road they had come in on. Miranda said she felt extremely scared and they couldn't believe anything could make such a loud and frightful noise.
This account has all the hallmarks of a Yowie encounter and what the couple describes is very similar to a number of other sighting reports we have where similar vocalizations have been described along with some sightings. We have reports from many locations in this region including the Toolara and Bauple forests. Some of the truck driver reports we have of roadside sightings in the region are incredible. Why Yowies decide to make these incredibly loud roars has researchers puzzled. There is some belief from researchers in America that the roar is used to debilitate prey and or flush out prey. There have been some estimated measurements made of Sasquatch roars above 120 decibels which is louder than a rock concert! We also believe that the growls experienced by witnesses are to ward off intrusion into hunting grounds or special areas.
This is a very interesting account and we have been out to the area for some site research. The area has plenty of habitats, food, and water resources to support these creatures.
